Admission Requirements

Considering Independence High School?

Thank you for your interest in attending Independence High School, North Fulton County’s non-traditional school of choice. The instructional program of Independence is a Blended Learning format to provide students with a flexible and supportive learning environment.

 

PRELIMINARY ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS – Students who wish to attend Independence MUST:

 

1. Live within the Fulton County school district.

2. Be at least 16 years old.

3. Have completed at least one year of high school.

4. Not be currently placed under suspension or expulsion.

- If your suspension/expulsion has ended you must return to your home school for at least 1 semester before enrolling at Independence.

5. Behavior will be reviewed and enrollment approved by the Administration.

6. Provide legal guardianship papers (if applicable)

7. Have a Composite Score of 3.5 or higher on the latest ACCESS test if classified as ELLs (whether active or waivered).

8. Attend an orientation/interview with an Independence High School Counselor.

 

ENROLLMENT PROCESS:

 

The Independence High School enrollment process involves several steps:

 

Step 1 – The student must contact his/her current counselor and request they send the following information to the counselor at Independence High School.

A. Most recent official transcript

B. Copy of most recent 504, IEP, and/or ELL access scores for enrollment (if applicable)

 

Step 2 – The student or his/her parent must complete the online application.  Our application will be available May 1, 2025 - Click the link https://forms.office.com/r/nzmrf4dpJx or copy and paste into your browser.   

Independence High School must have the transcript, application, and 2 proofs of residency on file prior to being registered for orientation.

 

Step 3 – Confirmation email – After the application and transcript have been reviewed, Independence will send the student/parent a confirmation email listing the required paperwork that must be submitted prior to being scheduled for the orientation. The documents include:

 

Step 4 – A handwritten essay, approximately one paragraph in length, written by the prospective student explaining why he/she    wants to attend Independence, why he/she did not experience success in a traditional school and what his/her educational and post-secondary goals are.

Step 5 Required Documents                                                                                                                                                                A. Georgia Immunization Certificate form (3231) Out of State immunization records must be transferred to Georgia Immunization certificate form (3231). The student’s health provider or health center must be contacted and asked to transfer out of state Immunization information to Georgia form (3231) C. Ear, Eye and Dental (GA Form 3300)

C. Copy of birth certificate and social security card.

 

D. Two (2) current proofs of Fulton County School District residency are required from all applicants.

 

i. One (1) current utility bill Water or Electric (ONLY)

 

ii. One (1) Residence document from the list below:

a. home mortgage bill

b. home sale contract

c. Current apartment/house lease showing student and parent/legal guardians name on the lease

d. Section Eight/HUD Housing Document or

e. Current HOA Bill

f. A current year tax bill or assessment

Students who are not living with a parent or guardian will also need to fill out form SS-9 Non-Parental Affidavit of Residence. This must be completed and signed in the presence of a notary by the person (must be 18 years old) with whom the student is living with. A copy of that person’s driver’s license must be presented at that time.

 

Step 6 Orientation – If the enrolling student is 17 or younger, the student and his/her parent must attend orientation. It is to your advantage to arrive early because after the orientation you will meet with the counselor to plan your class schedule and you are seen in the order of your arrival time. Students who have an IEP are welcome to attend the orientation but will be required to schedule an individual appointment with the counselor as well. All new students will begin classes at Independence at the beginning of the school year or the Monday following the week of orientation.

 

Step 7 Enrollment/Registration – After the orientation session/individual interview, a student who wishes to enroll will sign the Admissions Contract and complete the registration process.

 

Step 8 – Withdraw only after orientation or meeting with a counselor - Parent must contact the home school to withdraw the student. All devices and books should be returned to the home school. Students will not be able to start classes until they are officially withdrawn from their home school.

 

Students must provide required documents.

 

MISC:

1.       Transportation is not provided by the district for students attending Independence. There is a Marta stop behind the school at Oak and Atlanta Street.

2.       Once you are officially enrolled, it will take from 2 – 4 days for you to be able to access your classes online, however you need to report to school every day! Your teachers will have work for you to do.

 

3.       FEES – paid after you meet with a counselor or the mandatory orientation using OSP - Online School Payments

$30 Supply Fee pays for a mandatory clear backpack, pencils, pens, and paper etc...

$20 Parking Fee for each semester or $40 for a full year
